Weekend Getaway for Aspiring Royals? Popular Castle in New York Available for $675K

The only castle in the Lake Peekskill, NY, area is on the market for $675,000. Built in 1935, the home on Tanglewylde Road is assuredly unique.

“It’s a custom-built castle in an area where there are no castles,” says listing agent Ken Wile. “At the time [it was built], the area was a bunch of summer homes, like small bungalows. Nobody lived here year-round.”

Over the decades, the area about an hour north of New York City has changed, and many people now live there full time. In fact, kids grew up in this cool castle. It measures 1,644 square feet and has three bedrooms and 1.5 bathrooms.

A second story was added a few decades after it was built. The addition looks like a traditional house plopped right atop the castle, which adds to the structure's standout appearance.

“It looks nothing like the other homes, and that's what makes it cool,” Wile explains.

Ornamentations include crenellations (rectangular blocks alternating with openings across the top of a wall or tower) and gargoyles.

Inside, the rooms are bright and airy with red oak floors, stained-glass windows, and wooden beams.

“It's not that wide of a house, so you get sunlight from both sides. This is a bright, welcoming place to be,” Wile says.

The galley kitchen isn't fancy, but is perfectly functional with the right appliances, Wile says. And it wasn't always in this spot.

“The bathroom downstairs with the cool sink and vanity used to be the kitchen,” Wile explains. “They changed that to a bathroom and added the other kitchen.”

The house isn't huge and isn't exactly what you may have in mind when you think of a castle. There are no ballrooms or grand dining areas, but the residence does provide a cozy alternative to a drafty castle with wide-open spaces.

“Every nook and cranny is really designed. It has a purpose. Everything has a purpose,” Wile says.

The house sits on more than 2 acres and there’s plenty of outdoor space.

"It's actually the second-largest property on the whole lake, and the largest one is the one next door,” Wile says.

“The outside area with the fire pit is off the kitchen and the dining room," he continues. "When the weather's nice, that's the place to be. It's private and has a great view.”

The lake is only a 10-minute walk away.

Currently listed on Airbnb, this Castle by the Lake generates about $10,000 to $12,000 a month in rental income.

Wile says the perfect buyer will fall into one of two groups.

“It’s either an end user, someone who wants it either as a weekend or full-time house. Or someone who just wants an investment to rent it out,” he says. “It's been renting out for $500 a night, and that’s what provides it an additional value. As a single-family house alone, it's worth a certain price, but when you count the income that it's currently getting and future potential, it goes up a lot.”
