Desperate renters overlooking mould in bid to get a lease
Renters are overlooking mould issues as they desperately bid to get a lease amid Australia's rental crisis, a new study has revealed.

One in 10 renters who undertook a national Finder survey in May said they had accepting a property having a mould issue to try to secure a home.

A further 14 per cent of the 441 Aussies who took the survey said they had compromised on bidding for properties without a laundry or an aircon and 11 per cent said they had opted for a place with loud neighbours.

Finder's home loans expert Richard Whitten said the number of renters living in 'below par' conditions was frightening.

"Tenants are having to lower their standards and accept some really unpleasant living situations," he said.

"Thousands are stuck in rentals which would be considered hazardous purely because there aren't enough properties available to rent in their area."

The median rent for all houses and units across the country is up 11.5 per cent on last year, at $617 a week, according to CoreLogic's most recent Quarterly Rental Review.

Units in Sydney have been the hardest hit by the rental crisis, with their average rent having gone up 18.8 per cent since last year.
